Fountain of Living Water

13 Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.” John 4:13-14

The human body is about 60% water. And we cannot survive without it. In fact, we can generally only survive 3-5 days without water.  It is a fundamental requirement for all of life.

Think of a time when you were really thirsty. Maybe it was after working outside in the yard on a hot day. Maybe it came after eating salty or spicy food. Perhaps it was while exercising or running a race. To quench our thirst, nothing beats water. We need to hydrate in order to replenish lost water.

Hydration seems to be a trend in our culture today. Americans buy about 50 billion water bottles per year, averaging about 13 bottles per person per month in the U.S.* Hydro Flasks, Owalas, and Stanleys have become staples in many of our lives. Look around you, and nearly everyone will have a water bottle in some form.

In Jeremiah 2:13, God called Himself the “fountain of living water.” He said the Israelites had rejected Him, their source for water, and had dug their own cisterns that could not even hold water. He was referring to the false gods the people sought and worshiped. At first, we might find it absurd that the Israelites walked away from an infinite, free, life-giving spring to exhaust themselves building leaky, empty cisterns. But before we point our fingers, don’t we do the very same thing?.

Jesus came as the fulfillment of living water. In John 7, during the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus went to the temple to teach and offered ‘living water’ to those who believed in Him. Verse 37 says, “The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” This water will quench the deep thirst of our souls.

In John 4, Jesus traveled from Judea to Galilee. Jews would normally take the route around Samaria because they disliked the Samaritans and did not want anything to do with them. But Jesus chose to travel straight through. He arrived at Jacob's Well around noon, and because He was traveling in the heat of the day, He was thirsty. He met a Samaritan woman at the well to draw water. She tried to avoid people because she was there at noon, the hottest part of the day. Most people went to the well in the morning.

Jesus spoke with the woman, asking for a drink of water. The woman recognized Him as a Jew and questioned why He was talking with her. He referred to living water, and the woman was confused. This was shown in her response: He didn’t even have a bucket, and the well was deep. He told her that those who drink from His well of living water will never thirst again. The woman accepted His offer of living water, left her water jug behind, and ran to tell her friends and family.

Revelation 22:17 gives one final invitation to accept Christ. The offer is all-inclusive and is freely given, only to be received as a gift. This water of life is eternal life and spiritual renewal through Christ. This verse says. “Come! Let anyone who hears say, Come! Let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who desires take the water of life freely.”

Are you thirsty spiritually? Jesus can and will satisfy. Instead of chasing empty or temporary fulfillment through worldly desires, we find complete and lasting satisfaction in Christ. Through Christ, we find salvation, the forgiveness of our sins, and the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that streams of living water will overflow from those who believe. We are empowered to share Christ’s love, grace, and abundant life with those around us.

Unlike physical water that runs out, Jesus brings an ever-flowing fountain that blesses us today and gives us bright hope for tomorrow. If you haven’t already, will you accept the invitation found in Isaiah 55: 1, “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters.”?
