God of All Knowledge
Lord, you have searched me and known me. Psalm 139:1
We have a wealth of information at our fingertips. Just a few decades ago, we would take a trip to the library or search through books and encyclopedias to gain knowledge on a certain topic. Then came the World Wide Web, opening the door to a vast amount of knowledge that could be accessed from a computer with just a few clicks. As the internet became a part of everyday life, information that once took hours or days to find became available almost instantly.
The introduction of smartphones took this accessibility even further. No longer confined to a desk, we began carrying the world's information in our pockets wherever we went. Today, emerging technologies like artificial intelligence are making information even more accessible, helping us find answers, generate ideas, and learn new things in seconds.
Omniscience is the capacity to know everything; having infinite, unlimited, or universal knowledge. While humanity will never reach this point, we serve a God who already has. El Deah is a Hebrew name for God that translates to "The God of Knowledge", meaning He possesses infinite wisdom and intimately knows every detail of our past, present, and future, including our deepest thoughts and motives.
The name comes from 1 Samuel 2:3, where Hannah prays: "Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogant words come out of your mouth, for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and actions are weighed by him." In 1 Samuel 1, we learn that Hannah is barren, unable to bear a child. Year after year, she went to the temple begging God to bless her with a child. She was heartbroken. But we eventually see where God answered her prayers and gave her a son, Samuel. After Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord’s service in 1 Samuel 2, she offered a prayer of praise. In it, she declared that God is holy and steadfast and the God of all knowledge.
Psalm 139 paints a beautiful picture of God's perfect knowledge. God knows everything about us. He knows our joys, victories, fears, and struggles. God is never unaware of what is happening in our lives. He also knows every detail of the universe and every event in history. In Psalm 139:6, David acknowledges, “This wondrous knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.” Not only does God know everything, but He also controls everything. Nothing catches Him by surprise. Nothing confuses Him. Nothing is hidden from His sight. This knowledge is beyond human understanding!
The truth that God is all-knowing is incredibly comforting. We never have to wonder if He understands what we're facing. He knows our circumstances better than we do, and He knows what is best for us. He knows the burdens we carry, the questions we wrestle with, and the needs we haven't even expressed. He understands what we are facing. He knows the road ahead and goes before us. Because of this, we can trust Him completely.
The omniscient God we serve also loves us completely. He knows our failures, weaknesses, and shortcomings, yet He still invites us into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. We never have to pretend or hide.
We can come to Him honestly and with full transparency because He already knows us fully and loves us deeply. We can find comfort knowing that God is guiding our steps. We can stop trying to micromanage our lives and surrender control to Him. We don’t need to have all the answers; we can trust that God does. We can approach God with awe and worship Him in wonder at His divine knowledge. We can rest knowing that our future is securely in God’s hands.
