God of Truth
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; I wait for you all day long. Psalm 25:5
We live in a world where the line between right and wrong is often blurred. Our culture often pushes the idea that truth is personal, that it can be whatever we want or need it to be. When we live under these ideas, our lives become chaotic, twisted by lies and misunderstanding.
But the real truth does exist. And God is the author of it. He reveals Himself as the Sovereign Creator and Author of Truth in Genesis 1. He created the world and everything in it, and He declared it to be good. God firmly established truth from the beginning, and it remains the foundation for people’s faith and life.
The truth was perfect until Adam and Eve listened to the enemy's lies and deception instead of God and disobeyed Him. Today, truth remains to be challenged in many ways. False prophets and false messages are prevalent. The enemy wants to deceive us the same way he deceived Adam and Eve. However, God’s truth cannot be manipulated or manufactured. Numbers 23:19 states, “God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill?”
In Psalm 31:5, when David was about to die, he wrote, “into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, LORD, God of truth.” The name of God here is Yahweh El Emeth, meaning the God of Truth. It describes God as the foundation that never wavers, whose promises can be trusted. He is absolutely faithful, reliable, and trustworthy. In a world filled with uncertainty and unpredictability, this is so comforting. The Hebrew word Emeth is composed of the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, symbolizing a complete, encompassing truth that covers everything from beginning to end.
God reveals Himself and His truth through His Word. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” In order to know God’s truth, we must be in His Scriptures. We must read it, study it, memorize it, and teach it.
God’s truth is fully revealed in the life of His Son, Jesus. Scripture tells us that Jesus is the living Word and the image of the invisible God. During His earthly ministry, Jesus embodied the truth in word and deed. In His death and resurrection, He confirmed and fulfilled it. In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We only need to believe, confess, and surrender to HIm.
Upon Jesus’ ascension back to the Father following His death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit was given to all believers. He lives and dwells in us, providing teaching, counsel, conviction, and guidance in the truth. John 16:13 says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.” We must acknowledge the Spirit, align with Him, listen to HIm, and obey Him.
Once we know the truth, we have an obligation and responsibility to share it. We are to proclaim the unchanging truth of the gospel to a broken and hostile world. We need to be prepared and ready to do so, and then allow the Spirit to help and guide us.
When everything around us seems uncertain and out of control, we can live with meaning, purpose, and hope in a chaotic, often confusing world, knowing that God is Truth and that He will ultimately prevail!
