Lord of Armies

The Lord of Armies is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah Psalm 46:11

When have you encountered a situation that seemed impossible or too big to face? Maybe it was family problems, a broken friendship, the loss of a job resulting in financial issues, a health concern, an unclear future, or general anxiety. In these times, we often can feel alone and outnumbered, not knowing what to do or how to handle the situation.

We serve a God who does know, and He is there for us, fighting for us. In this case, God is known as Jehovah Sabaoth or The Lord of Armies. This name for God appears over 270 times in the Old Testament, primarily in the history and prophecy books. The nation of Israel faced many wars and battles, and this title reminded them that Yahweh was the ultimate force behind their protection and victories. It implies that no earthly power, problem, or enemy can outnumber or overpower Him. In referring to God as Jehovah Sabaoth, people declared that God was fighting on their behalf and had the ultimate authority to deliver them from impossible odds.

One such incident was when David faced Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. The Israelites were faced with war with the Philistines. Goliath, a huge Philistine man over 9 feet tall, stepped out and challenged the Israelites to send out one of theirs to fight him. When all the Israelite men saw Goliath, they retreated from him, terrified. Goliath was defying Israel and the armies of the Living God. This went on for forty days with no one taking the challenge. Finally, David stepped forward to fight the giant on behalf of the Israelites with no more than a sling shot and a stone. When he stood before Goliath, he didn't trust in his own strength. In verse 45, he declared, "I come against you in the name of the Lord of Armies.” David knew the battle wasn't his—it belonged to God. His confidence came from God, not from his own ability. God had been with David in the past when he faced a lion and a bear, and he knew that He would be with Him again. And God brought the victory!

Another example is found in the Book of Haggai. In two short chapters, the prophet refers to God as the Lord of Armies approximately 15 times. The Jewish exiles had returned to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon and were rebuilding the temple. But they were being persecuted, which led to slow and stalled work. It led them to doubt that God was with them. Haggai gives them this word from the Lord of Armies in Haggai 2:4-5: “4 Be strong, all you people of the land—this is the Lord’s declaration. Work! For I am with you—the declaration of the Lord of Armies. 5 This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.’” 

Today, we face our own battles and challenges, and we also engage in a spiritual battle every day. But we never face them alone. The Lord of Armies goes before us, walks with us, and fights for us. That doesn't mean we won’t have problems, but it does mean we can face every challenge with confidence because God is in control and is greater than anything we will ever encounter. Nothing is able to overtake Him, nothing takes Him by surprise, and nothing is beyond His authority. 

Whatever battle we're facing today, we must remember that the God who commands the armies of heaven is also the God who is with us. He loves us so much and wants what is best for us. We must turn our fears and doubts over to Him and trust Him to lead and guide us. He is on our side!

Prayer 

Lord of Armies, thank you for being greater than any of my challenges, struggles, doubts, or fears. Thank you for being in control, going before me, and fighting for me. Help me to trust You. Remind me that You are always with me.
