Our Counselor

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you. John 14:26

When have you faced a situation where you didn't know what to do or which decision to make? Life is full of questions, challenges, and moments when we need guidance. Who is a person in your life that you go to for guidance and help during these times of searching? We all have trusted people who listen, encourage, share wisdom and tips, challenge us, and support us.

While God often uses people in our lives such as parents, pastors, mentors, teachers, and trusted friends to offer wisdom, encouragement, and guidance, we need more than human counsel as we navigate life. Jesus came to earth as both God and man to live a perfect life. He gave us the example of how to live a life that honors God. But His mission was to die on the cross for the sins of humankind and then overcome death so that we might be reconciled to the Father. His role was not to stay physically present with us.

In John 14, as part of Jesus’ final time with His disciples, He assured them by promising that while He was going back to the Father, the Holy Spirit would come to be present with believers. Fast forward to Acts 2. Jesus had ascended back to the Father. It was Passover, and the Holy Spirit came like a violent rushing wind and filled the believers. Jesus’ promise had been fulfilled.

When the Holy Spirit was sent, He came to take up permanent residence within those who believe in and follow Jesus Christ. Think about how amazing that is! A member of the Trinity, God Himself, lives within every believer! He goes with us, everywhere we go. We are never truly alone because His Spirit is always with us.

One role of the Holy Spirit is to be our counselor. The word counselor is derived from the Greek word parakletos, meaning one called alongside to guide and help.  The Holy Spirit knows us completely and understands every situation we face. And life is full of uncertainty, struggle, and hard times. We were never promised an easy life as a believer. Who better to walk with us and guide and help us along the way than the Spirit?

When we're confused, the Spirit points us back to God's truth. When we're facing difficult choices, He helps us consider what honors God. And when we feel uncertain about the road ahead, we can remember that God has not left us alone. But keep in mind that the Spirit is with us in the day-to-day, too. Maybe it is the prompting to purchase a gift card for a meal for a neighbor who has recently had a new baby. Perhaps it is giving the words to say in a conversation with a coworker.

The Spirit works mostly as a “still, small voice.” Rather than a loud or dramatic announcement, His guidance may be experienced as a gentle prompting as He helps us discern how to live in a way that honors God. Go back to the neighbor example above. You are talking with this new mom outside, getting fresh air with her new baby. As you talk with her, a thought comes to mind: she and your husband could use a free meal they don’t have to prepare. That is the still, small voice of the Spirit. That thought certainly did not come from Satan, our enemy, who wants nothing more than to destroy what God is doing in our lives.

We are to do our part in our relationship with the Spirit. We must be in tune with the Spirit and His working in our lives. To do that, we must spend time in God’s Word, in prayer, and in a faithful Biblical community so we grow in recognizing the Spirit’s guidance. We must be alert to His presence and working. And when we sense the prompting and moving of the Spirit, we must act, stepping out in boldness to follow Him, whether it's a big move like a new job or a part of our everyday life like being kind to the person at work that everyone dreads.

We were never meant to face life or its challenges alone. We were gifted the Holy Spirit, our divine Counselor, to walk with us every step of the way!
