Waterfalls

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2

Since this past Friday was Good Friday, Danette, Colin, and I were out of school and off work. We decided to take the afternoon for a fun family adventure. After a short drive to a local creamery for lunch and ice cream, we drove on to find a waterfall in a nearby small town. After a few twists and turns on a country road, we found the spot and took a short hike to the waterfall. We enjoyed the beauty and grandeur of the falls, took pictures, and soaked in the beautiful, sunny spring day.

Immediately upon getting out of the car, I heard the rushing waters of the waterfall in the distance. And, the closer we got to it, we could see and feel the waters running with might and force over the rock formation and crashing into the pool of water below, emitting a spray of mist. I could feel the force, but at the same time, I could see its beauty. I was reminded of God’s strength and might. He is all-powerful but tender and loving at the same time. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.” God gives us the strength to face each new day, whatever it may bring!

A waterfall doesn’t stop flowing. If it does, then it is not a waterfall. It is constant and unstoppable. I was amazed at how much water flowed just during our short time there. I was brought back to the truth that God is ever-present, never changing, and always constant.  His faithfulness, love, grace, and mercy flow freely over us like the waters of a waterfall. Psalm 103:17 reassures us, “But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.”

After experiencing the magnificence of the falls, we hiked above the falls to the calm pool of water leading into the drop. I noticed the gentle breeze blowing and the birds singing. The sound of the raging waters was calming and relaxing. If I had had a hammock, this spot would have been an excellent place for a nap! It was so peaceful. God is our peace, in the calm and in the crazy turbulence of life. Jesus reminds us in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Gallons and gallons of water flowed over the waterfall while we were visiting. I thought about the fact that we need water to survive. The average person can only survive about three days without water. I also remembered times when I was thirsty and how I felt about taking a long-awaited drink. I was gently reminded that Jesus is our source of living water. And, with Him, we will never thirst again. In John 4:13-14, Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” We must be willing to share the Source of living water with others who do not know Him.

I am thankful for a fantastic Friday afternoon with the ones I love, my family and God, and His revelations. The next time you have free time, find a waterfall and see what God reveals.
