Bread of Life
“I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again. John 6:35
There’s nothing quite like the aroma of fresh bread baking in the oven. What's your favorite kind of bread? That might be a tough question because there are so many delicious choices! Maybe you love warm biscuits, flaky croissants, soft sandwich bread, English muffins, bagels, breadsticks, baguettes, pita bread, cornbread, hamburger buns, or tortillas. And that's only the beginning. Bread comes in countless varieties and is a staple in meals all around the world. It's hard to imagine our tables or our lives without it.
In John 6, Jesus refers to Himself as “the bread of life.” Just before He made this first of six “I am” statements, he performed one of His most well-known miracles, the feeding of the five thousand. A large crowd was following Jesus because they saw Him healing the sick. As evening approached, Jesus asked Philip, one of the disciples, about food for the crowd, knowing what He was going to do. The only food found was from a boy in the crowd with five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus had the people sit down. The men in the crowd alone numbered five thousand. Jesus took the items, blessed them, and distributed them. The people ate until they were full, and they collected twelve baskets of leftovers.
The next day, the people who had heard about Jesus feeding the people tracked Him down, looking for a free meal. They referred to their ancestors eating manna in the desert that God had provided. Jesus redirected their focus and asserted that He is the true bread from heaven. He told them that no one who comes to Him will ever be hungry again.
Bread is life-giving. It provides the nourishment our bodies need to grow, stay healthy, and function each day. In the same way, Jesus nourishes our souls. He is the source of life for us, now and for eternity. He came so that we “may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10). He is the only way to the Father and the only means for us to live eternally. When we trust in Him, we find the abundant life He promises today and the hope of living with Him forever.
Bread is satisfying. When we’re hungry, we crave and want food. Bread satisfies our hunger. While physical bread satisfies our hunger for a time, only Jesus can satisfy our deepest spiritual needs. We often look to other things to find fulfillment, but there is only One in whom we can find true satisfaction and fulfillment, and that is Jesus. Jesus is the answer to the deepest yearnings of the human heart. He fills us beyond measure.
Bread is desirable. It's more than just nourishment for our bodies. It tastes good, brings comfort, and is often a favorite part of a meal. Many of us look forward to it and really enjoy it. Can you say the same about Jesus? Do you desire to spend time with Him? Is He a significant part of your everyday life? God doesn't want to be an occasional part of our lives but rather desires a daily relationship with us.
Bread is for everyone. Around the world, nearly every culture has its own kind of bread. Even those who cannot eat traditional wheat bread look for gluten-free alternative breads because bread is such an important part of life. In the same way, Jesus came for everyone. His love and salvation aren't limited to one nation, race, or group of people. Jesus came to be the Savior of the whole world. Anyone who places their faith in Him can receive forgiveness, new life, and the hope of eternity.
Bread is relational. Sharing bread is a way to welcome others, get to know them, and build meaningful connections and relationships. Once we know people, we know how to minister to and serve them effectively. Jesus often used meals to connect with people. We’re called to do the same. When we do, we can point others to Christ.
In Matthew 26, when Jesus was celebrating the Passover with His disciples the night before His crucifixion, He took a piece of bread and referred to it as His body broken for us. When we partake of the elements of the Lord’s Supper today, it is a remembrance of Jesus and what He did for us on the cross.
Let’s not settle for things that leave us empty. Instead, come to the Bread of Life every day, and we'll find the satisfaction that only He can give.
