Light of the World
Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
Every day, we encounter countless sources of physical light. Some are things humans have invented, such as light bulbs, candles, flashlights, phone screens, and even glow sticks. Others are found in nature, like lightning, fireflies, and the moon. But none compares to the enormous source of light we see in the sky during the day - the sun.
The sun is massive. Approximately 1.3 million Earths can fit inside it, and its diameter is about 109 times wider than Earth’s. The sun isn't just big. It’s incredibly hot. Its core reaches temperatures of around 27 million degrees Fahrenheit! The sun gives us a glimpse of just how powerful and amazing light can be. And yet, even the sun doesn’t compare to Jesus. In today’s key verse, Jesus uses the second of His ‘I am” statements and refers to Himself as the Light of the World.
Earlier this year, we studied God’s name, Yahweh Ori, which translates to ‘The Lord is My Light’. This name in the Old Testament represented God as the source of guidance, truth, and deliverance. God shined into the darkness of evil, struggle, and chaos. In the New Testament, Jesus came to earth as the manifestation of Yahweh Ori.
This physical incarnation of God means we no longer have to walk in darkness. If you have ever tried to walk in a dark room or outdoors at night, you know how difficult it is not being able to see what is in front of you. You stumble around, run into things, and never know what is coming next. It is unpredictable and unsafe. Without Jesus, life can seem much like that.
But Jesus came to bring light to our darkness. When we accept and follow Jesus, we do not have to navigate life on our own. His death and resurrection made it possible for our relationship with the Father to be restored and our sins to be forgiven. This is grace, God's undeserved favor toward us, made possible through Jesus. Grace means receiving God’s goodness even though we haven’t earned it and don’t deserve it. Ephesians 2:8-9 says it beautifully: “8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— 9 not from works, so that no one can boast.”
This physical embodiment of Yahweh Ori also signifies that we have the light of life. When we use a flashlight in a dark space, we can see where we're going, avoid obstacles, and move forward with confidence. Jesus came to give us that kind of life, an abundant life. In John 10:10, Jesus tells us: “I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.” We can get so caught up in things of the world that we lose sight of this life that Jesus came to give.
But even greater than life here and now is eternal life. Jesus came to offer salvation to all. Our time on earth is temporary, but the life Jesus gives us extends into eternity. We can live each day in light of this hope. In John 10:28, Jesus says, “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.”
In His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, in verse 14, Jesus tells us: “You are the light of the world”. The verses that follow this one tell us that no one puts a light under a basket but rather on a lampstand. We are to shine the light of Jesus to those around us, so that those who do not know Jesus personally will see the difference He makes in our lives, and our lives will bring glory to the Father.
The light that Jesus brought into the world helps us see who we are, reveals who God is, and helps us to see how we are called to live. We don't have to stumble through life trying to find our own way. His light brings hope into our darkness, direction when we are lost, and truth when we are surrounded by confusion. May we cling to the hope that Jesus’ light brings into our darkness and be bold to share it with a lost and dying world!

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for bringing Your light into our darkness. Guide our steps and show us the way You want us to live. Help us to follow You faithfully and to reflect Your light to a world that desperately needs Your hope and truth. Thank You for the gift of abundant life today and for the promise of eternity with You.
