True Vine

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.” John 15:1

One childhood memory I have is picking wild blackberries. We waited until late summer, when the berries were at their peak, then went on a hunt to see where we could find them. We didn’t plant them; we looked for the wild ones that came up on their own. Maybe they were growing along a fence row on a country road, on the edge of a woods, or near an old farmstead. Once we picked the berries, we would take them home so my mom and grandmother could make homemade jelly and cobblers. Blackberries grow on what’s called a bramble, a cross between a vine and bush. 

In John 15, Jesus uses another “I am” statement. He and His disciples had just finished the Passover meal together, often called the Last Supper, in Jerusalem and were on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. During this walk, Jesus continued what is known as His farewell discourse. He would soon be betrayed, die on the cross, overcome the grave, and ascend to the Father. 

Jesus called Himself the True Vine. In a physical sense, the vine is the source of life for the branches and the fruit. It provides water, minerals, and other nutrients. Without the vine, the branches and fruit would not survive. Jesus is the source of life. What He was about to endure, as He shared with the disciples, made it possible for each of us to live for eternity. He overcame sin and restored our relationship with the Father, making an abundant life here on earth and eternal life a reality. 

In John 15:1 above, God is called the gardener. Literally, a gardener cares for plants by watering them, pulling weeds, fertilizing, and controlling bugs and other pests. With the right mix of love and care, the gardener transforms a garden. It becomes a place of life, growth, beauty, and nourishment. 

God, our Father, is our caretaker. He lovingly tends to us and cares for us. He provides all we need for spiritual growth and nourishment. We get a great glimpse of God’s nature and intention before sin entered the picture in the Garden of Eden in Genesis. God created a perfect place for Adam and Eve. He provided all they needed, and He walked with them. After Adam and Eve sinned, God made a way out- a rescue, redemption- that would ultimately be fulfilled in Jesus. In John 15, we see this plan about to come to fruition. 

The verses that follow John 15:1 address staying connected to the True Vine. To live a meaningful, fruitful life, we must remain in Jesus. This must be a constant connection and a complete dependence. When we abide in Him, we not only bear a little fruit, but we bear much fruit, just like those blackberry bushes at the peak of their season. 

So, how can we remain in Christ? First and foremost, we engage in an intimate, personal relationship with Jesus. As in our human relationships, we must spend time with Jesus through Scripture reading, prayer, and sitting in silence. We are to obey His commands and show His love to others. When we take these steps, we will bear fruit. 

As Jesus was about to depart from His disciples, His “I am” statement was important encouragement. He would remain united to them and they to Him as truly as branches are connected to the main vine. This is such encouragement for us today! He desires to stay connected to each one of us, offering support, love, guidance, and protection. We serve a personal God who is alive and present in our lives, if only we will allow Him to be!
