Way, Truth, Life

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6

A corn maze is an interactive entertainment experience that pops up all across the country during the fall. The purpose is for participants to navigate the twists, turns, and dead ends in order to make their way from the beginning to the end of the trail. I have tried my hand at this several times, and it was certainly challenging. I went from ready to face the challenge to annoyed and frustrated when we went the wrong way or hit a dead end. Along the way, we met others we could encourage or get advice from. When we finally made our way to the finish, we were so excited and definitely celebrated that we had made it. These times with family and friends were fun and worth the time.

In the Gospels, the disciples were with Jesus for three years during His earthly ministry. They saw Him teach people, heal people, and love people deeply. He had attempted to tell them His mission and fate, that He was going back to the Father, but they did not quite comprehend what was going to happen.

In John 14, on the night of Jesus’ betrayal and departure, when they took part in the Last Supper, Jesus once again told them He was about to leave them. They were confused and anxious, and rightfully so. The days ahead would be some of their darkest. Jesus attempted to put them at ease.

Thomas asked an interesting question: How can we know the way? Jesus responds with another of His “I am” statements: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Phillip then asks Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus responded that when they see Him, they see the Father.

Jesus is the one and only way to the Father; He bridges the gap between mankind and God. Salvation is only possible through Jesus. And He makes a personal relationship with the Father a reality. He also provides a way out of the situations we find ourselves in daily. If we are in relationship with Him and in His Word daily, He gives us direction and guidance, and His Holy Spirit gives us discernment and counsel.

Jesus is the ultimate source and revelation of God’s truth. God is the Author of truth, and Jesus is that truth incarnate. In a world of shifting opinions and ideas, where culture tells us that truth is personal and up to us, Jesus brings unwavering, absolute truth. He lived out eternal truths like unconditional love, grace, and justice. When Satan and others attempt to deceive and mislead us, we are to live out this truth.

Jesus is the source of a full, abundant life here on earth. He brings us from spiritual death to life.  When we live out the truth as Jesus showed us, we can experience this degree of life now. He also overcame death and the grave, giving us the possibility of eternal life with the Father after death. We no longer have to be anxious or concerned about an afterlife of eternal separation from God.

On the journey of life, which can feel like a corn maze with all its hurdles and emotions, Jesus is our comforting reassurance not to be afraid or troubled. He promises to go before us and to walk with us with His ongoing presence. His truth is eternal and all we need in a broken, often chaotic world. He is the source of life both now and for eternity.
